The Obama family: why three matches are not Always

Michelle and Malia's birthdays align in ordinary years, with a leap-year exception.

Name the four birthdays

For this example the family selection is Barack Obama, August 4; Michelle Obama, January 17; Malia Obama, July 4; and Sasha Obama, June 10. The presidential library identifies the parents and daughters, and the Miller Center's family biography records the daughters' birthdays. We compare the annual month and day, without drawing any conclusions about how close individual family members are.

The pair that almost looks permanent

Michelle's January 17 and Malia's July 4 share a weekday in 2025, 2026 and 2027: Friday, Saturday and Sunday respectively. Stop there and the result can look like an Always connection. In 2028, however, January 17 falls on Monday and July 4 falls on Tuesday. February 29 lies between the dates and adds a day to their separation. Across the full cycle, the pair matches in 303 ordinary years and differs in 97 leap years.

An honest family conclusion

Checking the other five pairs does not produce a permanent relationship or an additional occasional match. That does not make this a true Never group: Michelle and Malia still have a Sometimes relationship. Keep all four people in the final overview and draw only the supported path. The distinction matters because a negative answer to Is there an Always pair? is different from a negative answer to Is there any match at all?
